CONDITIONS WE TREAT

This list is not exhaustive as there are a wide range of neurological conditions that are forever evolving. Please don't hesitate to contact us to discuss further any other neurological condition that is not listed.

A stroke occurs when the blood supply to the brain is cut off. This can be a due to a bleed in part of the brain, also known as a haemorrhagic stroke, or due to a clot causing a blockage within the blood flow to the brain, known as an ischaemic stroke, which is most common. People can also have spinal strokes where the stroke occurs within the spinal cord.

NG Physio will complete a detailed assessment and discuss your individual goals. As every stroke is different it's important that we discuss your individual problems and how we can help.

Some problems after stroke may include sensory problems which is how things feel. This can be less or sometimes hypersensitive, for this we can work on sensory stimulation and other compensatory mechanisms. Muscle alignment can sometimes be altered due to high tone or low tone. Using facilitation we can work on postural awareness and alignment which can also help with stiffness and tightness. Facilitation and alignment techniques can help to reduce pain. We can work on muscle strengthening exercises, specific and global. Balance and co-ordination is a common symptom after stroke and we can work on specific exercises targeting these areas.

MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS (MS)

PARKINSON'S DISEASE (PD)

BRAIN INJURY/TBI/ABI

There are different brain injuries people can occur, one of those is a traumatic brain injury (TBI) for example in a road traffic accident. There is also an acquired brain injury (ABI), which can be due to a brain haemorrhage outside of the brain within the meninges, known as subdural and subarachnoid. It can also be due to infection such as encephalitis or meningitis and some brain tumours can also cause an ABI. There are also other brain injuries which can occur, such as an anoxic brain injury caused when the brain is starved from oxygen, this can be due to a cardiac arrest or at child birth.

Due to the brain being so complex, dependent on where the injury occurs, it can have widespread problems which can cause numerous difficulties with mobility, memory, speech and attention. Here at NG Physio we treat each person individually and focus on your independent goals that are set by you. We work together step by step to maximise your independence. Due to the nature of brain injuries we are able to work alongside carers and family to support with exercises and positional changes. Other problems may include ataxia, altered sensation, weakness, fatigue, balance and co-ordination, we have specialist skills to help improve these areas.

MS is an inflammatory neurological condition which affects the brain and spinal cord which can cause many different symptoms. Within MS the myelin, which protects the nerves and speeds the transmission of nerve impulses, becomes damaged and causes scarring, which then disrupts the messages between the brain and spinal cord.

Again MS is different in every individual and everybody will have their own specific symptoms dependent on where the damage and scarring occurs. As MS is known as a progressive neurological condition, some people will have flare ups in which physiotherapy can help manage new symptoms. Physio can also be used to maintain current function or progression for other goals.

Symptoms of MS may include muscle weakness, stiffness and spasms. High tonal patterns within the lower and upper limbs, stretches can be performed and advised for carers and family to complete. Foot drop is also a common problem and people can often need the right advice on the correct fitting orthotics. Many people have fatigue problems in which fatigue management plans can be advised. Clients may have reduced balance and risk of falling in which we can work together for the best plan to tackle this. Pain management advice and therapy can help with muscle spasms. We can also work on positioning plans to help maintain current functions.

Parkinson's is a progressive neurological condition that causes a movement disorder. It is due to loss in nerve cells within the substantia nigra which produces dopamine. Dopamine is a chemical that allows messages to be sent around the brain for co-ordination of movement.

PD is a progressive neurological condition. There are different types of PD and also people may have a diagnosis of Parkinsonism. At NG Physio we use our specialty to treat the individual's symptoms to achieve their individual goal.

Some PD symptoms may be freezing during gait, for this we teach compensatory strategies and explore different options to find the best solution for you. We are happy to work alongside the most convenient time for you as most people with PD are better at particular times, such as after medication. PD causes stiffness within joints, we will work together on alignment and working towards better postural awareness to help improve mobility and gait pattern. Alignment and postural awareness will also impact balance which we can progress to specific exercises to continue progress in this area and prevent falls. You may have difficulties with initiation of movement, for this we can provide other strategies in order to help improve this.
